Selwyn Steyn has steadily built his artistic articulations upon his Architectural training, creating a body of documentary snapshots of buildings at key moments in time.

His multimedia practice includes a range of raw building materials and debris, which he uses to investigate the meaning of the built environment and how this meaning changes over time. He seeks parallels between spatial theory and visual cultural manifestations. He explores individual and collective understandings of human psyche and identity, and the way that space and light evokes human emotion.

For Steyn, painting is a primordial practice Whilst reflecting the orderly nature of the urban environment, his art in fact embodies a series of his undefined ruminations within the relics of a bygone era.

Steyn has graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Architecture from the University of Pretoria, winning the Pretoria Institute of Architecture Design Award, and a Masters degree in Architecture from the University of Cape Town. He has participated in several group exhibitions and public commissions throughout South Africa, winning several awards for his work.
